What should I do if I experience side effects?
Most side effects are mild and settle by themselves, but it is important to know what to do if they do not. As a simple rule, anything severe or sudden needs urgent help, while milder effects are best discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
If it is an emergency
If you have a serious reaction, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, or any other severe symptom, contact your local emergency services immediately. Do not wait, as these signs need urgent medical care.
For milder side effects
- Read the patient leaflet that came with your medicine, which lists the known effects.
- Note when the effect started and how it feels.
- Contact a doctor through the platform, or speak to a pharmacist, for advice on what to do next.
You can record what you notice in your Diary, which makes it easy to share with your doctor.
Reporting side effects
Telling your doctor helps keep your treatment safe, and it helps others too. In many countries you can also report a side effect to the national medicines authority.
Common questions
Should I stop taking my medicine?
Do not change or stop a prescribed treatment without medical advice, unless the reaction is severe and you need emergency care. Ask a doctor first.
