Ciprofloxacin (Ciproxin®)is a strong, broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat many different types of bacterial infections. It’s part of a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, and it works by stopping bacteria from multiplying. It does this by targeting enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) that bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA. When these enzymes are blocked, the bacteria can’t survive.
This medication is commonly prescribed for urinary tract infections (UTIs), including both simple and more complicated cases. It’s also used for gastrointestinal infections like travellers’ diarrhoea and food poisoning, as well as respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Ciprofloxacin can treat bone and joint infections (like osteomyelitis and septic arthritis), skin and soft tissue infections, sexually transmitted infections, and it’s even used in cases of exposure to anthrax or plague.
One of the advantages of ciprofloxacin is its flexibility—it’s available as tablets, liquid suspension, eye drops, and even intravenous infusions, making it useful in both hospital and outpatient settings. Typical doses range from 250 mg to 500 mg twice a day, usually for 7 to 14 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection.
However, ciprofloxacin is not usually a first-choice antibiotic. It can cause serious side effects, such as tendon problems, nerve damage, and central nervous system effects like dizziness, insomnia, or even seizures. It is not recommended during pregnancy, in people with kidney issues, or those with a history of seizures.
Because ciprofloxacin interacts with medications like warfarin, NSAIDs, theophylline, and metformin, it’s important to inform your healthcare provider about any other treatments you’re taking.
Although effective, ciprofloxacin should be used carefully due to the risk of resistance and potential long-term side effects.
General Information
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It’s known for being effective against both simple and more complicated infections.
This antibiotic is prescribed for many types of infections. These include urinary tract infections (both simple and complex), gastrointestinal infections like traveller’s diarrhoea and gastroenteritis, and respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis. It’s also used for bone and joint infections like osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, skin and soft tissue infections, sexually transmitted infections, and even for people exposed to anthrax or the plague.
Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics. It works by blocking two important bacterial enzymes—DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV—which bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA. When these enzymes are stopped, the bacteria die, and the infection is brought under control.
The typical dose is either 250 mg or 500 mg taken twice a day. Your doctor will decide the exact dose based on the infection and your health condition.
Safety & Side Effects
Ciprofloxacin usually starts working within a few hours of the first dose. Most people begin to notice improvement in symptoms within 24 to 48 hours.
If you miss a dose and it’s been less than 6 hours, take it as soon as possible. If more than 6 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take the next one at the scheduled time. Don’t double up.
Ciprofloxacin can cause serious side effects in some people. These include tendonitis and tendon rupture, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), and effects on the central nervous system such as dizziness, insomnia, headaches, seizures, and hallucinations. Because of these risks, it’s not usually a first-choice antibiotic.
Yes, although rare, some people may have an allergic reaction. Symptoms can include mild rash, itching, or swelling. More serious reactions like trouble breathing, angioedema, or anaphylaxis are possible and require urgent medical care.
Ciprofloxacin can interact with several medications, including antacids, methotrexate, phenytoin, steroids, theophylline, tizanidine, and warfarin. Always tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medications or supplements you are taking before starting treatment.
In general, Ciprofloxacin does not affect sleep or alertness. However, if you experience dizziness or other nervous system effects, use caution with activities that require focus.
Ciprofloxacin is not recommended for long-term use due to the risk of serious side effects.
No, Ciprofloxacin should not be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Yes, drinking alcohol in moderation is allowed while taking Ciprofloxacin. There is no direct interaction, but it’s always a good idea to limit alcohol during antibiotic treatment.
Usage & Administration
Ciprofloxacin is usually taken by mouth but may also be given by intravenous infusion in hospital settings. Always follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider.
Store the medication at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from light and moisture.
Taking too much can lead to serious side effects, such as liver or kidney damage, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, seizures, or hallucinations. If this happens, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
You should avoid Ciprofloxacin if you’re allergic to it, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a history of tendon disorders.
It can be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, taking it with a meal may help.
Yes, the tablets can be broken or crushed if needed. However, always check with your doctor or pharmacist before doing so.
Ordering & Delivery
You just need to answer some medical questions and pay upfront. Once a doctor gives the green light, your Ciprofloxacin is prepared and shipped by the pharmacy.
Yes, a valid prescription is required for Ciprofloxacin. After you complete a short medical questionnaire and payment, a doctor will review your case and provide a prescription if appropriate.
Your Ciprofloxacin will be shipped promptly after a doctor has approved your answers and issued a prescription.
Because Ciprofloxacin is a prescription medicine, it cannot be returned once approved by a doctor, in line with strict health and pharmacy rules.
