Xenical is a prescription medication that helps support weight loss in individuals who are overweight or obese. It contains the active ingredient orlistat, which works by blocking the absorption of dietary fat. Unlike appetite suppressants, Xenical acts locally in the digestive system and can reduce fat absorption by approximately onethird of consumed fat.
The unabsorbed fat is then naturally eliminated through bowel movements. This helps reduce calorie intake, leading to gradual and sustained weight loss when combined with a reducedcalorie, lowfat diet. Xenical is typically recommended for individuals with a BMI of ≥ 30 kg/m², or ≥ 28 kg/m² in the presence of weightrelated health issues such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes.
Xenical is usually taken three times a day with each main meal containing fat. It is important to follow a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet during treatment. To ensure proper absorption of fatsoluble vitamins, a daily multivitamin supplement containing vitamins A, D, E, and K is advised, taken at least two hours before or after taking Xenical.
Common side effects include mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as oily or fatty stools, increased flatulence, or more frequent bowel movements. These effects often improve with continued use and adherence to a low-fat diet. Rarely, orlistat has been associated with elevated liver enzymes or acute kidney injury; consult your doctor if you experience abdominal pain, dark urine, or blood in stool. Observational studies report a mean placebocorrected weight loss of 3.2 kg at one year
Xenical can help improve health markers related to obesity, including modest reductions in blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure, particularly when combined with lifestyle changes. However, it is intended for chronic use under medical supervision.
General Information
Xenical contains orlistat, a lipase inhibitor that blocks fat absorption in the digestive tract.
It’s used to help with weight loss in overweight or obese adults, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
By inhibiting gastrointestinal lipases, orlistat prevents a portion of dietary fat from being absorbed and calories from being stored.
One 120 mg capsule with each main meal containing fat, up to three times daily.
Weight loss may begin within a few weeks, with more meaningful results in the first 6 to 12 months.
If the meal contained fat, take the capsule as soon as you remember; otherwise, skip. Do not double doses.
Safety & Side Effects
Mild GI effects (e.g. oily stools, gas) are common and may lessen over time. Rare serious effects include liver enzyme elevations or kidney injury, seek medical advice if symptoms such as pain, dark urine, or blood appear
Do not use if you have chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis, hypersensitivity to orlistat, or serious liver/kidney disease.
May reduce absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and affect medications like cyclosporine, warfarin (monitor INR), levothyroxine, and certain HIV antiretrovirals.
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, use safer alternatives. Monitor nutritional intake if used under expert guidance
No direct interaction, but excessive alcohol can hinder weight loss and impose extra strain on the liver.
Usage & Administration
Swallow whole with a glass of water. May be taken with or without food.
Store in a dry place at room temperature, away from heat. Keep out of children’s reach.
No, it must be swallowed whole.
