It is a small, T-shaped device made of plastic and copper or containing hormones.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of IUDs:<br \/>\nCopper IUD (non-hormonal) \u2013 Releases copper, which prevents sperm from fertilising an egg.<br \/>\nHormonal IUD (<a href=\"\/ro\/product\/mirena\/\">Mirena<\/a>, <a href=\"\/ro\/product\/kyleena\">Kyleena<\/a>, etc.) \u2013 Releases progestogen, which thickens cervical mucus and may stop ovulation.<\/p>\n<p>An IUD is inserted by a healthcare professional and can last between 5 and 10 years, depending on the type. It is one of the most effective and low-maintenance contraception options available.<\/p>\n<h3>Who is an IUD suitable for?<\/h3>\n<p>An IUD may be a good choice if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Want long-term, highly effective contraception (over 99% effective).<\/li>\n<li>Prefer a low-maintenance method that doesn&#8217;t require daily or weekly attention.<\/li>\n<li>Are unable to use oestrogen-based contraception (e.g. the pill or patch).<\/li>\n<li>Have heavy or painful periods (hormonal IUDs can make them lighter or stop them).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, it may not be suitable if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have certain uterine conditions (such as fibroids) that affect IUD placement.<\/li>\n<li>Are prone to pelvic infections or have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).<\/li>\n<li>Have an untreated sexually transmitted infection (STI) at the time of insertion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How does it work, and what are the options?<\/h3>\n<p>The copper IUD works by releasing copper, which:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stops sperm from surviving in the uterus or fallopian tubes.<\/li>\n<li>Prevents implantation of a fertilised egg.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The hormonal IUD releases progestogen, which:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thickens cervical mucus to block sperm.<\/li>\n<li>Thins the uterine lining, making implantation unlikely.<\/li>\n<li>May stop ovulation in some women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The procedure involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A GP or nurse inserts the IUD into the uterus using a small applicator.<\/li>\n<li>The procedure takes 5\u201310 minutes and can cause mild discomfort.<\/li>\n<li>Once fitted, the IUD can stay in place for 5\u201310 years, depending on the type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other contraceptive options include the <a href=\"\/ro\/treatment\/combination-pill\/\">Combination Pill<\/a>, <a href=\"\/ro\/treatment\/mini-pill\">Mini Pill<\/a>, <a href=\"\/ro\/treatment\/contraceptive-patch\/\">Contraceptive Patch<\/a> or <a href=\"\/ro\/treatment\/contraceptive-ring\/\">Contraceptive Ring<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Is an IUD?
